To have a job where you give away money to high-achieving organisations working to make the world a better place sounds, on paper, like a dream. And in many ways, it is.
There is deep satisfaction in supporting meaningful work and seeing real impact unfold. But the reality, on both sides of the table, is more complex.
Having spent over 30 years both making grants in corporate and not-for-profit settings, and seeking them on behalf of not-for-profit organisations, I have learned that maximising the value of a grant is rarely straightforward. It requires clarity, discipline and a willingness to ask hard questions before, during and after the funding process.
Here are some essential grant seeking tips every organisation should consider.
1. Be Clear on What You Actually Need when Grant Seeking
One of the most common mistakes in grant seeking is pursuing funding simply because it is available, not because it aligns with your mission.
A strong grant funding strategy starts with clarity. Funding should enhance or accelerate your existing work, not distort it.
When organisations reshape their goals to fit funding criteria, they risk drifting away from their core purpose. Over time, this weakens both impact and organisational integrity.
Before applying, ask:
Will this grant meaningfully advance our mission?
Are we staying true to our priorities, not changing them just to secure funding?
If the answer is not a clear yes, it may not be the right opportunity.
2. Research the Grant-Maker Thoroughly
Successful grant applications are built on alignment, not guesswork.
Before applying, take time to understand the funder:
What is their mission and strategic focus?
What types of projects have they funded previously?
What outcomes are they prioritising?
This research does not just improve your chances of success. It ensures your organisation is entering the partnership with integrity.
Also consider reputational alignment. Some organisations choose not to accept funding from industries such as gambling, alcohol or tobacco. These decisions should always be intentional.
Pro tip: Start the conversation early
Strong grant-makers welcome early engagement.
A short conversation can:
Confirm whether your project is a good fit
Save significant time on applications
Open doors to partnerships or alternative funding opportunities
In many cases, the relationship is just as valuable as the funding itself.

3. Understand the True Cost of Grant Funding
There is no such thing as free money.
Every grant comes with operational demands, including reporting, stakeholder engagement, evaluation and project delivery.
Too often, organisations underestimate the internal resources required and stretch existing teams too thin. This can lead to burnout, poor project delivery and missed outcomes.
Instead, build a realistic plan:
Who will deliver the work?
Do we need additional staff or expertise?
What systems or processes need to be in place?
A well-funded project can still fail without proper resourcing.
4. Treat Grants as Strategic Partnerships
Grants are not just funding. They are formal agreements with expectations.
These often include:
Reporting and accountability requirements
Measurable outcomes and evaluation
Ongoing communication with funders
When approached strategically, these requirements strengthen your organisation’s impact and credibility.
The key is to enter into every funding agreement fully aware of what is required and confident in your ability to deliver.
Final Thought: Look Closely Before You Leap
There is an old saying about not looking a gift horse in the mouth. When it comes to grant funding, the opposite applies.
Take a close look.
Understand what is being offered, what is expected in return and whether the opportunity genuinely supports your mission.
When approached thoughtfully, grant funding can be a powerful tool for growth and long-term impact. When approached hastily, it can pull organisations off course.
